INTRODUCTION THE FOUNDER WHY ‘STREET REVOLUTION - SINGAPORE STREET FESTIVAL’? Having travelled around in the region in end 1990s, Annie has witnessed the same boredom in youths - all waiting…for something to do….something to happen….to keep them occupied and fill the void. Annie also remembered how in her young days…there was always something in the street to watch…to listen to, be it opera, variety shows, story tellers at street corners, or even just groups of people playing guitars and singing. Annie decided to bring back some of these things that triggered her memories and to inject activities into the urban districts of Singapore. She had hoped that some vibrancy…colourful landscapes….with exciting events and/or activities for the youths in Singapore…hence Street Revolution - Singapore Street Festival was born. Street Revolution - Singapore Street Festival was created to provide a platform for Singapore youths to showcase their talents, skills and abilities in the performing or visual arts, lifestyle trends, fashion and sports, entrepreneurship, technology, health and environment. We are targeting youths from 14 to 39 years old be they working or studying. Many local talents have not been given the chance to perform or to be exposed to the various forms of performing skills and talents through the performing arts. The young and restless in Singapore require events and activities to help occupy them, and more crucially, to nurture their creative and innovative minds. With that in mind, Street Revolution - Singapore Street Festival was created in 2001 and was officially launched in 2002. Singapore street culture has increasingly presented itself to date as a trend, alongside prominent and articulate figures in society who have challenged and successfully shifted the margins of possibility and social norms in the past decade. The most passionate focus of SSF is its unwavering allegiance to a shifting melee of beliefs: internationalism, multiculturalism, peace, and experimentation with freedom, love, and with a great attitude. Street Revolution - Singapore Street Festival is created to help provide our youths with the opportunity to initiate and inspire across the multicultural spectrum, as well as to be connected with popular culture. SSF provides an opportunity and platform for self-expression, an avenue for our youths through their performances and helping youths to develop a language with which they are able to define their passions and identify the like-minded among their peers. Focalizing on the 'street' context is pivotal in maintaining the vitality, energy and authenticity of the festival. It is a style that speaks across the generations - from daughters to mothers, sons to fathers, amateurs to professionals. An important point to note here: it is far from adequate to simply target the message to at a single ethnic group. There are now infinitely subdivided cultural melting pots, and the different demands and needs of these different subgroups are exerting their presence in the global market. A one-size-fits-all approach is no longer effective. With pluralism factored and programmed into its framework, Street Revolution - Singapore Street Festival has, since its inception in 2002, seen excellent results both in performers' participation as well as responses from audiences - the general public and tourists alike. These are RESULTS, we can't ignore.
